ROLE 8: DATA COACH
Using Evidence to Learn, Not Judge
Throughout her work, Joellen Killion has consistently reframed data as a tool for learning rather than evaluation. She often notes that how we use evidence matters more than the data itself.
The Data Coach role, number 8 in our learning series of the 10 coaching roles in her book “Taking the Lead,” supports educators in making sense of evidence with curiosity and care. In literacy contexts, this includes examining student work, assessment patterns, and instructional outcomes – not to assign blame, but to guide reflection.
When data is introduced without context or trust, it can shut down conversation. When it’s paired with thoughtful questions and shared inquiry, it becomes a powerful learning driver. Joellen encourages coaches to frame evidence as an invitation: What are we noticing? What might this mean for our students?
This role helps teams move from reacting to numbers toward understanding learners.
Action Step:
Bring one piece of literacy evidence to a conversation this week and frame it with a question rather than a conclusion.
We’ll explore how evidence can fuel learning, not fear, together on February 27, 2026.
